The head of the EC Jean-Claude Juncker shared his impressions of communication with US President Donald Trump, noting that he was not used to hearing from the interlocutors the words “you are wrong.”
In the summer of last year, Junker held talks on trade issues between the EU and the US in Washington with Trump, having managed to reach agreements with the American leader. On Tuesday, at the Politico edition in Brussels, Juncker, who will retire in the fall, was asked to talk about his relationship to Trump.
“I have a good relationship with Trump … As a person, I like him. It’s always easier when you have a good personal relationship with a person to negotiate hard,” Juncker said, noting that he took Trump’s words as a compliment, which previously described Juncker “brutal killer” because of the EC policy in the field of antitrust and tax policies.
Last summer, the EU and the USA decided to create an executive working group of the closest advisers to the head of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, and the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to promote the trade agreements reached as part of their meeting in Washington in late July. The US and the EU agreed, in particular, to refrain from imposing new duties during the time of the trade discussions.
The EU wants to start negotiations with the United States on the removal of duties on certain types of industrial goods, with the exception of agriculture. At the same time, the EU does not agree with the additional duties imposed by the USA last year on imports from the EU of steel and aluminum products.
