CAMBRIDGE MA, Apr 06 (IPS) – With climate change contributing to five consecutive years of rising levels f “undernourishment,” according to FAO estimates, the institution for the first time recognized and began to support agroecology. The move was controversial, and José Graziano da Silva has been personally criticized for allowing the FAO to veer from its traditional promotion of industrialized agriculture. Graziano was DIrector General of United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome between 2012 and 2019. During his tenure, agricultural practices associated with the “Green Revolution” – reliance on commercial seeds, fertilizers and pesticides were encouraged, welcoming also the growing calls from farmer and indigenous groups for more sustainable approaches.
