In order to create a world free of nuclear weapons, which is the cornerstone of the disarmament and non-proliferation regime represented by the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, the United Arab Emirates has reiterated its commitment to upholding and strengthening international peace and security (NPT).
The UAE once again expressed regret that the Final Document of the Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) was not accepted during the substantive discussion on nuclear weapons at the United Nations. She emphasized the Conference’s significant contribution to the nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament regime in that context. In light of this, I asked the UAE to hold talks, consult, and take other actions to advance this goal.
The UAE reiterated its request for all nations to adhere to international agreements and documents relating to nuclear security and safety in the statement, stressing that doing so would improve global peace and security. In compliance with pertinent treaties, most notably the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, it also emphasized the significance of a transparently based strategy for the peaceful use of nuclear energy (NPT).
In November of the next year, the UAE expressed excitement about taking part in the third session of the Conference on the Establishment of a Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction in the Middle East, emphasizing the significance of full and active participation from all parties involved.
It was the responsibility of the States of Annex II to work toward signing and ratifying the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty in light of the growing hazards posed by nuclear weapons’ continued existence, possession, and development. The IAEA safeguards system, which offers a dependable mechanism to ensure that nuclear materials and infrastructure are used for exclusively peaceful reasons, was again emphasized as having a crucial role by the UAE.
The UAE emphasized that as part of its dedication to the non-proliferation system, it signed the Additional Protocol and reached a “complete safeguards” agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). In order to restore confidence in the purely peaceful nature of their programs, she reiterated the call for States that faced questions about the nature of their nuclear activities to offer the necessary cooperation, respond to IAEA inquiries in a positive way, and take any other necessary actions to allay international concerns.
The United Arab Emirates expressed its conviction that the best method to achieve the desired aim, namely nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, was to create consensus through complete and full participation through a multilateral approach under the auspices of the United Nations.
